The cast members of "The Threepenny Opera" sign this Playbill
Show bill signed: "
Lotte Lenya
", "
Beatrice Arthur
", and "
Jane Connell
" in black ink. 22 pages, 6x9¼. Show bill for the Theater de Lys production of "The Threepenny Opera", signed on page 3. The singer and actress known professionally as
Lotte Lenya (1898-1981)
was born in Vienna, and achieved her breakthrough role as Jenny in the Berlin premier of "The Threepenny Opera" (1928), written by Kurt Weill in collaboration with Berthold Brecht. She was
married to Weill from 1926 to 1933, and again from 1937 until his death in 1950
. Her second husband was American editor George Davis, hence her compound spelling of her last name. Lenya (and Weill) fled Germany in 1933, and both found new success in America. She reprised her role as Jenny in the first New York presentation of "The Threepenny Opera" (1956), the only time an off-Broadway performance has received a Tony. Later she originated the role of Fraulein Schneider in the original Broadway performance of "Cabaret" (1966). Meanwhile she had reached a new audience of film-goers, portraying Bond villain Rosa Klebb in
From Russia with Love
(1963).
Lenya did not perform musically on Armstrong's recording of "Mack the Knife."
She was merely present as an advisor. However, Armstrong improvised her name into the lyrics, singing,
"Look out for Miss Lotte Lenya,"
a line Bobby Darin repeated on his hit version of the song.
Beatrice "Bea"Arthur (1922-2009)
began doing
TV comedy in 1954
(
The George Gobel Show
,
Caesar's Hour
). After a
hit guest starring appearance on
All on the Family
in 1971, Arthur got a
sitcom of her own,
Maude
(1972-1978), for which she won an
Emmy Award
and was
nominated for four Golden Globes.
Later the
co-star of
The Golden Girls
(1985-1992), Arthur had made her TV debut on
Kraft Television Theatre
in 1951. She has also
appeared on Broadway
, winning a
Tony Award
for her performance as Vera Charles in
Mame
(a role she reprised in the 1975 film, for which she received a
Golden Globe nomination
) and
stealing the show as the matchmaker in
Fiddler on the Roof
.Jane Connell (1925-2013)
appeared in
13 Broadway plays
between 1959 and 2001, with
starring roles in
Mame
,
Dear World
,
Me and My Girl
and
Lend Me a Tenor
.
She made numerous TV guest appearances. Toned. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
