The musical due to the controversy surrounding it had a struggle to make it to Broadway. First performed at Carnegie Mellon University in 1970 it made it to New York as an off-Broadway production in 1971. Godspell opened on May 17, 1971 at the small Cherry Lane Theater in the Village and was so successful that it moved to another off-Broadway theater, The Promenade three months later where it ran until 1976. Meanwhile it went on an international tour in 1971 to, Australia, London, Washington D.C., Toronto and South Africa before landing on Broadway in 1976. In 1973, it was released as a feature film! The Broadway Show opened in June of 1976 at the Broadhurst Theatre and transferred twice to other theaters before closing in September, 1977 after playing 532 performances and previews. The show has since been revived all over the world both in professional and amateur productions. There have been two off-Broadway revivals and a Broadway revival in 2011.
