    Signed photograph of German actor Anton Lang (1875-1938) as Jesus Christ. Hand-signed by Lang in ink and dated 1900, the first year he portrayed Jesus at the Passion Play of Oberammergau in Bavaria, Germany. He reprised the role in 1910 and 1922. Photo is 4.25 x 6 inches. On a large cardstock mount, 10 by 12 inches.
    VG condition. Signature fully legible but a bit faded and smudged. Impressed stamp in the lower corner of the publisher, Leo Schweyer Kunstverlag of Oberammergau. The Bavarian village has staged the sacred drama every ten years since 1634. The tradition began after villagers believed God spared them from an outbreak of the plague. Lang was internationally renowned for his performances, but he ran afoul of the Nazis late in life for his pacifism and
    opposition to making the
    Passionsspiele
    overtly anti-Semitic.
