French mime Marcel Marceau (1923-2007) modeled his sad sack character, Bip, on Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp. Bip, created in 1947, is widely recognized by the single red flower sprouting from his hat. Marceau's career as an entertainer was delayed by WWII, during which he served in the French Resistance. After the war, Marceau gained worldwide popularity as a mime, and he greatly furthered the modern art of pantomime. Ironically, Marceau had the only spoken lines in Mel Brooks' Silent Movie (1976).
