Description
Original Theater Program of the production of Dodsworth performed at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre during the week of February 26, 1934, and starring Walter Huston. SIGNED BY WALTER HUSTON. The autograph has not been authenticated. Many autographs seen online, on photographs mainly, are more measured and carefully written, more right slanted. This one appears to have been, and likely was, scribbled while the actor was leaving the theater. Similarities can be seen when comparing other signatures online, such as: 1) the "W" never connecting with the "a" in Walter while the "H" was always connected to "u" in Huston, 2) the cross of "t" in Walter underplayed or absent in online signatures as here while the cross in "t" in Huston exaggerated online as well as here, and 3) the "r" ending Walter and the "n" ending Huston are similar to each other and scribbled both here and online. This playbill was found with others in the same era in NYC in an estate sale, and I have no reason to believe it wasn't hand signed in person. In any case, you see what I see.The program itself is in GOOD CONDITION. Solidly bound 19 pages, lightly soiled covers, one page had a small chunk missing along the edge cut out. Dogears on the front cover corners were straightened for storage and shipment. It was folded vertically at one time but was found flat and was stored as such, so while the crease can be seen and felt, it has largely been straightened over time.
On Walter Huston from Wikipedia:
"Walter Thomas Huston (/ˈhjuːstən/ (About this soundlisten) HEW-stən;[1] né Houghston; April 5, 1883[1] – April 7, 1950) was a Canadian-American actor and singer. Huston won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, directed by his son John Huston. He is the patriarch of the four generations of the Huston acting family, including his son John, grandchildren Anjelica Huston, Danny Huston, Allegra Huston, and great-grandchild Jack Huston. The family has produced three generations of Academy Award winners: Walter, his son John, and granddaughter Anjelica."
